I have lunch with James Powell. James is a native Austinite and a highly respected antiques dealer of 45 years. Out of left field, he asked me if I knew anything about “Victims of the Galveston Flood” statue as realized by Italian sculptor, Pompeo Coppini a few years after the Storm of 1900.  I had no idea what he was getting at. He asked me to try to find the statue on my iPhone. I punch in Coppini Victims of the Galveston Flood. Up pops the Victims photo. I believe James said it was a plaster-paris realization of what was supposed to have become a bronze statue on prominent display in Galveston. James has a dream to have this piece finally realized, in bronze. His aunt Mattie Gallagher, age 18, was the woman holding the child in the sculpture. The first child tugging at her dress is Besse Gallagher at age 9. The infant is Fern Gallagher at age 1. The Gallagher Family was close to Coppini and his wife. They saw him frequently at his mansion in San Antonio.
